FRANCISCO ROMÁN: “THERE IS NO PATIENCE IN THE WORLD TO WAIT FOR THE LONG TERM.”
The Chief Executive Officer at Capgemini and the President at Vodafone, Francisco Román, talk about hyper-connectivity, transformation, digitalisation, immediacy… but also about talent, intuition, values, and the future. They both agreed on the fact that business has changed greatly in the last few years. But Mr. Román pointed out that, “To lead is about leading people, is about winning minds and hearts. That hasn’t changed.”
On the topic of strategy, one of the fundamental topics that Paulo Morgado likes remarking on, Román claims that, “the role of strategy hasn’t changed. It is about choosing a future and walking towards it. And the stages of a strategic process are still the same.
One must understand one’s environment first, choose one’s positioning, develop the capabilities that support the differentiation of one’s positioning… One has to understand that it all has to do with execution, which relies on people and talent. However, what previously was a sequential process is a permanent process now, where all the various stages are overlapped. And, thus, it is trial-and-error in nature. Nothing must last too long. Long-term deadlines do not exist as such. One must have a strategic vision, a vision for the future, and understand what’s happening. There are no favourable winds for those who do not know where to go.”
